About |
||||
|
Creekside Artists was established in 2000 as a not-for-profit co-operative, with the aim of providing affordable studio space for artists working in all disciplines. The group started off by converting an empty industrial unit within Faircharm Trading Estate into 12 separate yet communal workspaces, housing up to 24 artists. The open-plan layout helps to promote discussion and encourages a constant exchange of ideas between artists and their work, while the communal areas also provide free exhibition space for our artists. The group's inclusive ethos has led to the development of Creekside Artists as a unique place in which to work, with the diversity of creative practices and approaches ensuring an exciting and dynamic environment. Studio members all volunteer their time and efforts to keep the studios running. Creekside Artists celebrated its 10th anniversary this year and achieved charity status – Official Charity Registration Number 1135739. The group is building on the success of recent projects to further develop their provision for raising arts participation in the local community. Creekside Artists is an active member of the 'Deptford Art Map', a local network of art galleries and artist studios. The studios are a short walk from Deptford Bridge DLR, Deptford and New Cross stations – less than 10 minutes by train from London Bridge or Waterloo East. Creekside is very creative with several other artist communities based along the same road, including Cockpit Arts, Cor Blimey Arts, Frameworks Art Hub, APT gallery and the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. Open Studio events are held 3 times a year (in June/September/December), giving members of the public an opportunity to meet the artists and designers and explore their working studios. Evening private views usually feature live music and performances. The artists organise frequent events and group shows outside the studios – in 2009 Creekside Artists exhibited at The Menier Gallery and collaborated on a week-long collaborative drawing marathon at The Albany, which was selected for the Deptford X programme, featured in the South London Press and filmed for BBC world service as part of their international news coverage of the Big Draw. This year, in addition to numerous and varied exhibitions that individual members have participated in, Creekside Artists have showcased their work in group exhibitions at The Limelight Gallery in Lewisham Library and the Seven Dials Club in Covent Garden, for London Fringe Festival. Members have worked together to present a textile collaboration at Lewisham Art House, exhibited a collaborative drawing sketchbook at University for the Creative Arts, hosted Deptford Art Map tours and events, set up a 'pop-up' exhibition space in the corridors of Workspace commercial units in Deptford, and been commissioned to run projects for Deptford X festival. They were funded by Lewisham Arts Service to paint a pathway in Mountsfield Park, provide collaborative drawing activities at this year's Lewisham People's Day and get members of the public drawing portraits of each other for The Big Draw in October. |
