'Still-Moving'
Sally Waterman
Viewfinder Photography Gallery, London
5th-19th December 2007
'Still-Moving' is comprised of two photographic 'still movies' inspired by two literary texts; 'The Turn of the Screw' by Henry James and T.S Eliot's poem 'The Waste Land'. Marking Waterman's transition from photography to moving image, and her consequent interest in the interaction between these two mediums, the complimentary films deal with her preoccupation with the personal interpretation of literature into visual narratives.
The unsettling silence of both works emphasizes the inherent qualities of ghostliness and invisibility that emerge from Waterman's elusive self-portraits. The governess in 'The Turn of the Screw' (2001) attempts to understand what is real and what is imagined and the figure within 'In the Cage' (2007), based on the non-communicative relationship in section II of Eliot's poem, 'A Game of Chess', seeks solace by merging into her surroundings, after acting out a series of carefully constructed manoeuvres.
